Our client, a thriving Houston area law firm, is experiencing growth and seeking to hire a highly skilled and experienced Appellate Litigation Legal Secretary/Legal Assistant. This position requires the willingness to learn appellate law and support attorneys in both litigation and appeals. This position is a direct hire/permanent opportunity and comes with a competitive benefits package and compensation structure. Currently, the firm allows for 1 remote day per week to provide flexibility for the right candidate.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Create, revise, and maintain a diverse range of legal documents with meticulous attention to detail and accuracy.
  • E-file documents with various state and federal courts to ensure efficient and compliant submissions.
  • Maintain client files, ensuring well-organized electronic filings, served documents, correspondence, and other case-related materials on the firm’s shared server for active files.
  • Efficiently retrieve cases via Westlaw to support attorneys in their research endeavors.
  • Assist with various stages of case management, including preparation of trial exhibits.
  • Perform administrative tasks, including time entry for assigned lawyers, travel arrangements, deposition scheduling, date calendaring, answering telephones, sorting and distributing incoming mail, and file management.
  • Coordinate meetings, correspondence, and travel arrangements for assigned lawyers with clients and firm members.

Job Requirements:

  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience as a legal secretary, supporting attorneys with an appellate practice.
  • Possess a comprehensive understanding of state and federal court rules and filing procedures to ensure adherence to all regulations.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word and Outlook to produce high-quality legal documents and maintain smooth communication.
  • Ability to edit briefs using Microsoft Word Styles (Table of Authorities and Table of Contents). 
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines, exhibiting flexibility and adaptability when needed.
  • Willingness to occasionally work overtime to meet critical project requirements.
